LINNETS - EXTROADINARY NUMBERS in 2019 VISMIG also FAT HEN and other Notes eg: 2020 etc

Linnet
Photo: Thanks to Craig Bell

It's been really puzzling about the large quantities of Linnets I have had in recent days whilst doing my vismig counts from Vicarage Lane in Burton. In normal years I guess I would get about 20 Linnets during a daily a count at the very best, although this usually all changes when it gets to the middle of October and then the daily counts can get to four score or even above the 100 mark!
But what is remarkable about this year is that I have been getting regular daily counts over two hundred since about the 16th of September with 5 counts of over 500 plus between the 21st and the 24th of the month, in fact the count had risen to 896 on the 24th and 655 by the 25th.  These extroadinary numbers I must say have had me wondering what is going on! I have mentioned it to others and some have suggested that a local food source may be enticing the birds, another suggestion is that maybe a new roost has formed and that we are getting birds from this.
In my own mind I am now clear that the majority of the birds have without doubt been passing through the area directly on a regular migration line, although I have been suspect about 100 birds which seem to have remained local and can be seen blogging for the past few days.
I have checked all the fields looking for any enticing crops and have managed to find two things which could well be tempting some of the blogging birds to feed up on, although the bulk of the birds are seen to pass directly through our area totally ignoring any food crops or such. The crops which could be of interest to the bloggers are Fat Hen (Chenopodium album) and possibly the 'bolters' within the fodder beet (Beta vulgaris).  I can show photographs below of the crops.  The Fat Hen do look very much like a millett type of food, yet to me look very much unripened at the seed heads, whether this makes a difference or not! (see photos below)
The roosting theory does not uphold having checked out the areas later in the day and nothing is apertaining.
After noting high Linnet numbers at both Long Nab, Burniston, N. Yorks on 12th September 2019 with 434 birds and at Spurn on 26th September 2019 with 759 birds. Having been unclear to what was going on I can now get some sort of comfort knowing that at least other areas have also been getting large numbers of Linnets as well.
I guess I am still left with the following question.  But why all of a sudden as this happened when its never been recorded previously in the past ten years?

Sept 12th - 29 birds - Wind direction SE
Sept 13th - 45 birds - Wind: NW
Sept 14th - 119 birds - Wind: SE
Sept 15th - 25 birds - Wind: SW
Sept 16th - 206 birds - Wind: E
Sept 17th - 99 birds - Wind: NW
Sept 18th - 257 birds - Wind: E
Sept 19th - 124 birds - Wind: E
Sept 20th - 94 birds - Wind: E
Sept 21st - 500 birds - Wind: E
Sept 22nd - 579 birds - Wind: E
Sept 23rd - 573 birds - Wind: SW
Sept 24th - 896 - Wind: E
Sept 25th - 655 - Wind: E
Sept 26th - 270 - Wind: SW
Sept 27th - 306 - Wind: SW
Sept 28th - 82 - Wind: WSW
Sept 29th - 32 - Wind E
Sept 30th - 150 - Wind W
Oct 1st - 108 - Wind E
Oct 2nd - 34 - Wind N
Oct 3rd - 128 - Wind E

It's now early January 2020 and most of the fodder beet has now been harvested.  I am still witnessing up to 200 flocked Linnets in the local area which corresponds to similar numbers previously recorded during January 2019. This over wintering of Linnets in the area was not recorded prior to the more recent growing of fodder beet and its associates (Fat Hen etc) which has obviously been the attraction for these birds to overwinter here.

(26th November 2020) Again in 2020 I have had good numbers of Linnets passing through yet probably around 3/4 of what I had last year (2019).  So far recorded on Autumn migration through Burton In Kendal is around the 8000 mark compared to 12000 in 2019 although I have not finished yet.

There are small parties from less than ten to anywhere up to a fifty or so which come at regular intervals throughout the day, although I am only recording what comes through over a hour or more each morning, although I have on the odd occasion when going for a late afternoon walk witnessed them as late as 1700 hours and still going through to a South East direction.

It is worth me mentioning that whatever I do get in numbers at Vicarage Lane, Burton, it is probably only a small proportion of the far larger amount that must go through the area as a whole (eg: Farleton, Hutton Roof and Burton In Kendal).  I have had several experiences in the past were I have been doing some work on Hutton Roof, and whilst having a brew on a high point area which lies slightly to the south of Kelker Well, I have witnessed several parties of Linnets going through to the South on migration over a period of time of about 30 minutes (Aug to Oct).  I have also in past years been heading over Uberash Roughs and also Burton Fell and again had parties of Linnets going through to the South on migration - so this proves there must be a massive broad front over the whole area with this species. Although I am unaware of anyone else closeby recording such high numbers.

Another interesting note is that we do nowadays have a local wintering flock of about 200 birds which can be seen in the area.

The Linnet - My Migration Notes

This little bird is always in a hurry dashing here there and everywhere,
not like the Chaffinches who can be slow at times or fast at others.
The linnet nearly always flies low - not high like the Chaffinch.
They fly different to the Goldfinches, who are always in a very tight ball,
and the Goldfinch do more quick bobbing in their flight
The Linnet does bobbing in its flight but more spaced on the length than the Goldfinch.
If you see a large party of finches silently passing you there is every chance they will be Linnet (sometimes called the silent chaffinch).
The Linnet practice togetherness and can be like bullets, whereby Chaffinch are more spaced out and do less bobbing in their flight.

Its also interesting to realize that feeding parties or wintering birds do prefer to feed in fields that have already been harvested (eg which had fodder beet with fat hen etc) and obviously after harvesting they will have their waste spread along the floor with spent seed etc) and in wide open areas, although occasionally they will feed within a pre-harvested (covered in) field which still has its seeds in upright positioned flowers (fat hen) etc.  Although Chaffinch will use both on a regular basis, but for some reason the Linnets prefer the openess.

Gentianella campestris (Field Gentian)
Rare White specimen

Photo: Hutton Roof on 13th September 2019

With this sunshine it was worth yet another visit to the Campestris (Field Gentian) to see if any of them had opened up their flowers and sure enough one or two of them were open.

I thought maybe I should search a completely new area. The new area was about two hundred yards away from the established population, I managed to find approximately 20 plants (80 flowers).  I'll bet there are more when we do a more precise count in the next few days. All turned out to be Gentianella Campestris (Field Gentian)

On my way to todays gentians it was so pleasing to see all the hawthorn trees and there are numerous (scores to maybe one hundred or so), full to the brim with ripe (some overripe) berries.  Although I could only hear one distant Blackbird cackling away today, I envisaged masses of thrushes converging on this spot over the coming days and they will strip these same trees bare. In most years the local thrushes will strip the trees of their berries before the continental visiting thrushes arrive and would expect their arrival to start in about 3 to 4 weeks time.

Also had one Painted Lady and one Red Admiral butterfly making their way South....

Gentianella campestris - Field Gentian
Photo: Hutton Roof on 11th September 2019

Started off today checking out our campestris (Field Gentian) and what little beauties they have turned out to be.  It looks very much like we do have about 400 of them (flowers), so small and tucked to the ground within a inch or two at best.  My friend Richard Bate (Dr. Hawkeye) recently found a extroadinary plant which appears to be coming through as a white flowered specimen (see photo below). This is almost unheard of within this species....

My intentions today had already been set out to go over the Fell to the Farleton side to see if I could find anymore Amarilla (Autumn Gentians).  I searched all the areas around were I found some the previous day and did manage to find a further 6 full plants, bringing the total this year to approx 16 full plants with approx 60 plus flowers in total.... and below are a couple of photos from today.

Autumn Gentians (Gentianella amarella) Found some at last!

If you want to check out the 2019 VISIBLE BIRD MIGRATION PAGES then please click over the following link: https://arnsidesilverdale.blogspot.com/2019/09/2019-visible-bird-migration-reports.html

Yes it turned out a great morning having at last manage to find more Autumn Gentians.  None were at my regular sites which this year like last year all recorded NIL, but a little further to the East and I was surprised to find at least a further 10 specimens at the side of about 100 yard of track  which all turned out to be the rare northern sub species SEPTENTRIONALIS. The best area had 5 specimens and was in a slightly more acid deposit area than the others with more soil with rank grass between the plant and the limestone

This is a well and truly good find for me because I was about to think we were going to have yet another year without our little beauties the Autumn Gentians. I had previously searched all our known established sites and only turned up one specimen so far this year, but this morning I had time on my hands and so broadened my search to unknown territories and yo and behold there they were, at first odd ones scattered and then a little cluster of some 5 or so, as usual they were close to a well trodden footpath.

Odd daring Chaffinches having a go, but to be honest did not expect any to be bothering this morning. The Starlings coming from roost in dribs and drabs, no massive parties seen this morning, that was yesterday! however they could well have come over at high altitude which they sometimes do and get missed.  It is great when observed like yesterday. Arrived on site at 0707hrs

Surprised to be getting small Fieldfare parties with a couple of reasonable size eg: 100 and 75. Obviously more birds must have come into the country during the past 24 hours. Also has forecast both Continental Starlings and also Chaffinch did quite well, which makes things worth carrying on for a while.

After checking out Trektellen sites (for comparison ideas) and giving consideration to that of mass recording sites in Northern Europe it is now becoming clear that the mass migration movements of both Thrushes and Starlings are near a end for another year in the UK, although there maybe a limited amount of movement still left, especially with the Chaffinch who are still recording good numbers.

Obviously with this clag there were little in the way of birds unless they went directly overhead, but pleasing to have 5 Fieldfare visible and calling whilst heading to the SE, also a limited amount of Starling, but most impressive were the "slow release" of ex roosting Starling with small regular 20 to 30 parties, interspersed with a grand party of 2000, and then other large parties of 400 and 150 etc, this went on for the full watch period commencing late at 0748hrs.

Taylors Fields, Vicarage Lane, Burton In Kendal 0645hrs - 1100hrs
Wind: E6-14mph, 3c, 0.mm rain, 77% humidity, 0% cloud, 1021.2mb pressure.  On arrival winds SE 7 mph. It freshened to 12-15mph by 1015hrs and even greater to 15-25 by 1100hrs.

The Thrushes did not go for it today, neither did I expect with wind direction and speeds changing to SE. The Starlings were even larger parties some to 300 but these also seem to drop from 1000hrs. Small Redwing parties earlier well disorientated some going ESW. Starlings ex roost (3000) stopped closeby and started doing small murmurations before falling to the ground and after 15 minutes feeding, set of again on their normal onward journey to Kirkby Lonsdale areas.

Wind: ENE 2-8mph, 4c, 0.mm rain, 87% humidity, 0% cloud, 1027.7mb pressure. All dropped by 1130am which coincided with strengthening of wind to 12mph and directional change to ESE, losing the whole important Northern element.

Again good numbers of Fieldfare, but sadly missed the crucial hour! still did OK. Starlings were well going for it today, probably their peak day I would have imagined. It all stopped with the thrushes at 1115hrs as though someone turned the tap off....

Wind: NE 8-14mph, 2c, 0.mm rain, 88% humidity, 1027.8mb pressure.Very cold and cloudy in patches with blue skies in between.

Birding was great with large Fieldfare parties right from the word go.  Again using the same lines as yesterday and the regular lines on a Northerly directional wind. 1 line goes directly across Hutton Roof west flank or over the summit in a North West direction. Or another lines comes over from Dalton Hall and in the direction over the back side of Burton (Peter Cummings fields) and then crossing over Vic Lane at the back of the old Vicarage and up past Curwen Wood. Missed thousands which were going directly North over Hutton Roof towards the Lune Valley side.

This was the main routing of the Thrushes today - crossing over Hutton Roof (shown above)
from the right hand and all the way through to the left hand before veering West

This is the other route they took which shows them having come up from
somewhere near Dalton Hall and crossing over Vicarage Lane, again
to head across to the West.

Wind: SE 8mph, 11c, 88% humidity, 0.8mm rain, 100% Cloud, 996.6 mb pressure. It was hard work with rain medium at times heavy through to 1000hrs and off and on until 1100 when it became clearer with sun breaking through and 5% blue skies. Also making things difficult was it started out SE winds, but by 1000hrs you could see thrushes totally disorientated and going in all directions, then I checked the winds which should they had changed from SE to SW and through to West.  Things picked up a little from this change especially when it started to rain yet again, but soon birds where coming through strong (Chaffs and Linnets) and then when everything was dry and settled it just stopped at 1100hrs and birds shut down.....First large Fieldfare party eg: 40

This was unusual cloud this morning

Friday 11th October 2019

Taylors Fields, Vicarage Lane, Burton In Kendal 0700hrs-0915hrs
Wind: WSW 15-28mph, 11c, 0.1mm rain, 100% cloud, 998mb pressure. Wow it was awful yet again with light rain at first and continually flekking rain, there were brief dry spells of 5 minute periods but by 0900hrs it came on heavier.

Birds just were not interested at all and some that were trying to get through just had to succumb whilst cascading from higher altitudes to find refuge in the food foraging in Taylors fields, possibly on spent maize or seeds of other plants. Nothing at all exciting today...bring on the Easterlies... please....

Birds were having none of it today, a small number of determined went through in both Chaffinch and Linnet, but numbers were rather disappointing for the main peak dates. Although there is always something going on a a few skeins of Pinks were interesting especially the 200 party. A few Redwing making West/South West.

Sunday 6th October 2019

Taylors Fields, Vicarage Lane, Burton In Kendal 0700hrs - 1030hrs
Wind: W 7-14mph, 11c, 0.1mm rain, 100% Cloud cover, 1006mb pressure. From first light at 0710hrs the mist was in the bottom and also shrouding Hutton Roof, but within minutes it gradually started creeping up and eventually filling in by 0730/0745hrs sending visibility down to 30 yards. It starting receding by about 0900 to a mile visibility, then became bright and sunny. Unfortunately the movement by then had totally given up with just the odd one or two birds having a go.

The only Redwing activity were birds I presumed had probably roosted overnight in Hutton Roof (which is usual during a movement) with the main birds setting off West at first and then turning SW odd birds going West and some SE. Skylarks seem to have been far better numbers over the past two years and again today I had 35SE in dribs and drabs

Wind: WSW 12-22 mph, 11c, 1.1mm rain predicted, 100% cloud, 1001mb pressure. Rained all morning with no let up until about 1115am - the time I left.

The birds just were not having it today, I think the rain seemed to be the main problem together with medium strong WSW winds. It was nice to have some Redwings from about 0915hrs and their passage only lasted over the hour.  All birds seemed to come over or out of the middle of Hutton Roof and all went on a direct West line towards the mosses and A6

Wednesday 2nd October 2019

Taylors Fields, Vicarage Lane, Burton In Kendal 0700hrs - 1000hrs
Wind: North 1mph, 4c, 1% Cloud, 1015mb pressure. First proper frost having to clear windscreen.

Lots of thrushes in the lane on approach, they seemed to be flashing across in front of me in plenty.

NOWT ABOUT! Yes it really was quiet this morning to say it's coming up to the busiest time for passerine passage, obviously atmospherics playing their part today and the birds did not want to know, this is regular on Northerlies coupled with bright weather (but not always).... but still we did have a few that persevered.

Chaffinch: 90 (74 SE and 16W) best: 3x4

419,100 Chaffinch through Falsterbo obs 1-2% would be Bramblings - Counters estimated that at one stage 14k "Chafflings" went through per 5 minute watch they also had 3170 Siskin and 2850 Linnet

Notes:
Goldfinch have more finesse and when there is little wind are seen in a tighter more rounded bunch appearance with gracious and delicate bobbing. Linnets far more direct and very linear in width and with more eractic in their bobbing.

Taylors Fields, Vicarage Lane, Burton In Kendal 0630hrs - 0830hrs and then from 1010hrs to 1200hrs

Wind East 20-40 mph, 11c, 98% Cloud, 998mb pressure. Rained all the way through light to medium, but the winds never let up with gust up to 40 mph at times. Rain looked like it was stopping when coming away at 1200hrs.

It was a proper struggle for the birds, but they just kept on coming in dribs and drabs, because of the winds you would see them tumbling from high to get rest on the ground, some came with haste at low level of perhaps one yard above the floor and then up and over the hedgerow just like you see Starlings do. Some birds coming through high and making it without problem, others coming through high and getting blown back all the time. It was a cruel one for the birds yet they still want to keep coming.......

Some of todays notebook ditties I write (rather than doodles) which always help the morning along (when quiet!) I guess you could call it mind eruption.....

1) Linnets as usual are Lo, Lo, Lo (good thing about them always easy to count)
2) You do have to be patient vismigging, so patient as though you are here to watch paint dry!
3) Those annoying distant calling Jackdaws can sometimes create confusion sounding like the "chup" of a Chaffinch.
4) Far to bright today for them to be remotely interested!
5) Not breaking any pots but steady eddie time.
6) They will plod on like this all day!
7) Very noisy from motorway to South West

Taylors Fields, Vicarage Lane, Burton In Kendal 0630hrs-0930hrs
Wind: E 15-30mph, 11c, 100% Cloud, 991mb pressure.

On arrival it was 99% dry, but you could still feel odd specking in the air, but by about 0800hrs the heavens opened and it was really heavy rain all the way through my count.
I was surprised that some birds were so resilient that they came through even in this heavy rain (at least 30 Chaffs and 15 Linnet). I think they will carry on all day in trickles whatever the weather.

Chaffinch: 83 all SE (best 2x7,2x6,2x4)

Excellent to hear these......

*************

The Fat Hen do look very much like a millett type of food, yet to me look very much unripened at the seed heads, whether this makes a differene or not!

Wind: SSW 10-22mph, 11c, 97% Cloud Cover, 996mb pressure. Kept dry although threatening rain up until about 0900hrs then heavy rain throughout after that, but birds still kept trickleing through, so I created my motto for me to think about eg: "If the birds want to come through in heavy rain, then the least I can do is stand there and count them".

Definately there is build within the movement with the Chaffinch parties growing in numbers, it will be interesting what we get over the coming days as long as the winds play their part! Nice to get my first Brambling.

Wind: WSW 12-22mph, 13c, 34% Cloud, 995mb - Noisy directly below from motorway stopping good audible.

Quieter today, although perhaps expected with WSW winds. Nice to see Song Thrush continentals arriving and again small Starling parties arriving. More Skylarks. Larger Chaffinch parties from 0900hrs onwards. Had to pack up by 1000hrs but noticed lots of Chaffinch and Linnet moving South down near home which were coming through on a far wider line and would without doubt have been missed from my watchpoint which was far too East of this line to pick them up.

Taylors Fields, Vicarage Lane, Burton In Kendal 0630hrs - 1000hrs .
Wind: East 1-2 mph, 12c, 100% cloud, 996mb pressure. Sultry grey overcast sky, difficult to see birds at times, some birds very high. All movement to SE unless stated.

Today seemed poor from the start, probably down to no wind = no bird syndrome, just steady trickles but by 0845hrs a proper drop and remained very quiet until about 1000hrs when it started up again but much diluted to the point of occasional trickles, but I soon had to leave. I put the drop down to wind change because at that time the wind was moving around from East to South and it was almost South by the 0845hrs drop. Also today very annoying being bit with midges throughout.

Both the Linnet and Chaffinch seemed to be getting busier today. Again a few Skylark. Also could not help but be attracted to a calling Willow Warbler in the hedgerow, which did oblige with a showing. First snipe of the year.

Sunday 22nd September 2019

Taylors Fields,Vicarage Lane, Burton In Kendal 0630hrs - 1030hrs Wind: E 10 mph reducing to 6mph, 14c, 100% Cloud cover, 1003mb pressure.  All birds SE unless stated.

Brilliant first thing especially with the Linnets, they just kept coming.  Sadly it was not to carry on because of heavy rain coming in after 45 minutes which then carried on up until 1030hrs but by then nothing much was moving.  I did note at the start of the heavy rain and later both Linnet and Chaffinch were still going through in trickles even through the rain.. I now have a extra problem with the Linnet and that is because the farmer has harvested the maize yesterday and subsequently it has allowed a blogging party to form of some 120 birds enjoying the feast of spilt maize. Anyway I think I did OK managing to keep these birds out of the equasion by localising their movement... I really can't understand what is going on with all these Linnets we have never had so many at this site before and so early WHY ?. Looking back in the histories we usually only have a score or two per day if we are lucky, yet from about the mid October we may then get between 1-200 per day maybe, so I just wonder what the significence can be?  Midges and small flies cascading even while raining.

Linnet: 579 (496 SE and 83W) best parties: 1x70, 1x50, 2x30, 2x20, 1x18, 5x15, 1x13, 1x12 1x10.  287 birds were within first 30 minutes - also 120 blogging
Chaffinch: 201 best parties: 1x32, 1x7, 3x6, 3x5 (179 SE and 22W)
Swallow: 31 SE (one party in a tightish "ball of Swallows") moving in heavy rain.

These two photos above shows how the showers had just missed my vismig point

and one looks blue...

Saturday 21st September 2019

Taylors Fields, Vicarage Lane, Burton In Kendal 0630hrs - 1200hrs.  Wind: E 9-16mph, 9c, 0% Cloud cover, 1015mb pressure.  All birds SE unless stated.

This morning was excellent right from the word go, because the high pressure was moving on and there was a strong 10mph wind which made it very difficult for the birds getting blown back and taking low flight, some within a metre above my head. The Linnet passage was especially fabulous with lots of parties around a score in number. By the 11am the wind had freshened to about 15mph and got too strong and the movement just stopped. They were taking off the maize and it was busy with tractors and trailors and 3 disturbed Roe deer.

Friday 20th September 2019

Taylors Fields, Vicarage Lane, Burton In Kendal 0630hrs -1130hrs .  Wind: E 2-3mph, 10c, 3% Cloud cover, 1027mb pressure. All birds SE unless stated.

Very poor vismig today, it set off similar to yesterday with rolling fog from all the lower perimeter areas, but this did clear to 90% after about 30-45 minutes although again like yesterday there is some retention which will probably stay there for the day.  I dont think this was the problem with the low passage numbers, I am sure this will be down purely to much settled high pressure setting in over the last three days.  This should sort it self out once the high pressure moves out in the coming 48 hours.

What was noticeable today was that the STARLING numbers leaving their roost site have started to build in numbers and I guess this will be the start from continental birds joining in with the locals, I noticed yesterday that on the East Sites (Spurn etc) they too had started getting Starlings through.  Also odd thrushes now starting to show, as though they too are getting restless.  Over the next week should start to see the continental Chaffinch and Brambling as well. More Siskin today.
