18th and 19th April 2021 - Newclose and Dalton Hall Park (private) and Dalton Crags etc.

Newclose, Majors Nursury and Dalton Old Park - Sunday 1700hrs.

A fantastic sight at approx 1700 on our way to Newclose Woods (private) on the Dalton Hall Estate, when we accidentally surprised no less that 100 Fieldfare which lifted off the nearby field and settled in the uppermost branches of the large ancient trees to the entrance of the Dalton Old Park (private).  To get so many at this time of year is so unusual. I have over the years had singles and small groups in mid- april, but never such a large party as this which obviously must be feeding up on their long journey back to Scandinavia.

I counted about 6 Willow Warblers which is well under par as yet for this area. Also found some nice Bugle coming through, Wood Sorrell, as usual lots of Primrose.

Dalton Crags - Monday 1000hrs

Counted at least 13 Willow Warblers back on their norm territories over Plain Quarry, Lower Dalton Crags (esp Bonk) and higher Dalton Crags, perhaps two territories still waiting. Just one Chiffchaff calling, although I know two are on territories, still some to come (I hope!). One Blackcap now returned to bottom East side. At least two pairs of Stonechat back on territory. I know there are at least one pair of Tree Pipits returned. Brimstone butterfly in usual place on Plain Quarry car park.

Told a Cuckoo returned yesterday at Yealand Redmayne.

The Fairy Foxglove is coming on nicely in the old quarry picnic area (see photos), also some emerging Brittle Bladder Fern.
