Polypodium interjectum or Western Polypody (Bifid examples) Nature Diary - 16th February 2022 - Burton In Kendal

Full Blog Index below (scroll to bottom of page)

I discovered this plant about two years ago and almost immediately noted its striking differences in particular towards the pinnae ends which on the majority (but not all) of the fronds took on this bifid (or forked end appearance). Even more striking was later in the year to find that some of the pinnae actually had developed into a three fork situation, but still to be called bifid.  (Monday 4th Feb 2019)

Daphne Mezereone (Hutton Roof side) and checking P. Cambricum - Nature Diary Mon 14th Feb 2022 - East sides of Hutton Roof.

Monday Feb 14th 2022 - Daphne Mezereone and Polypodium Cambricum - East flank of Hutton Roof.

My plan was set to check out the Hutton Roof Daphne Mezereone and it again turned out very disappointing.  Each year the plant seems to have been going downhill and now we only have 3 flowering plants out of the original 7 left, and these were well behind (in comparison to No.2 on Holme Stints) and only showing a token of buds mainly shut, odd ones opening.  I really dont know whats causing the demise of this species but this seems to have been going on now for some years. I have collected a few photos to try and show you the current situation.

Also while out in that direction just could not resist a check up on the most beautiful of our Polypodium cambricam (Southern Polypody).  They were fabulous and seem to be getting larger every year. (this year 36cm frond included within 46cm rachis). I am going to have to call my friends over to check out a lot of these Polypodiums, some are growing crazy and could even be those unstoppable hybrids.  We are so luck here we have all three Polypodiums set within 100 yards so the inevitable could well be happening and I would hate to miss them.  A special place here were cambricums grown out from the trees.

Daphne Mezereone - Nature Diary 9th February 2022 - Stints

Photo: Daphne Mezereone Specimen 2 - Hutton Roof North side - 9th February 2022

Daphne Mezereone - Specimen 1 and Specimen 2 - Holme Stints

It was time to check out the Daphne Mezereone and I now reckon one more week will be spot on for Specimen 2 of which I have plenty of photos taken today which you can see below.

Sadly this year could well be the demise of Specimen 1 unless some miracle happens, I have seen this happen now with lots of Mezereone. It does still have a small amount of ripened buds but purely a token (see photo).

I also did a thorough check out to see if I could find anymore but nothing showing today.  But nice again to check the large interjectums (Polypodium interjectum) which are well at home in the fork of a medium sized hawthorn tree.  There are some good large boulders in this area which would support cambricum but again I could not find any today.

(above) is Specimen 1 which I found about 6 years ago, but sadly in the last three years it has deteriorated. The specimen is built on vintage gorse rooting which is showing signs of crumbling and as such has loosened the Daphne plant. Although it seems firmly fixed directly below it is vunerable by being so loose and swinging from side to side has the wind takes it, I have managed to temporarily trap it to stop if swinging.  Perhaps it could be side pinned or re-inforced some way. (A job at the end of flowering - IF!)

Moving on to Specimen 2 which is doing well and in full flower with scores of buds still waiting to open fully, I guess maybe one week to see the full showing.  But even today it looked well and here are a few photos.

And one or two other bits from this afternoon.

Very large interjectums

Its now time for me to go over on the East side of Hutton Roof to check out our other Mezereones.
