NATURE DIARY

Monday 7th February 2022 - Fantasizing about
Polypodium cambricum (Southern Polypody)

Out of the regular three, It's the last Polypody to show and would not expect much before early July. But when it does come it last for much of the winter. It was only a couple of weeks ago I was checking one of the Lancelot Populations which you can see from the photos below.

Some of the fronds of Cambricum can be quite large just like these shown below which I found over on the Hutton Roof side. Note the delta shape and how wide across the middle.

Although the fern is quite rare, it is surprising just how often it is starting to turn up, but that's simply because more of us are now out there looking for it.  This week in particular I have heard from my friend Martin over on the Hutton Roof side who has now found several more populations, which I hope to get over there in the next week or two.

Also this week Julian and Steve found several more populations growing over to the west of us! so things are looking great at the moment.

Polypodies (vulgare or interjectum) are regularly seen growing from a tree base.  But rarely do you see "cambricum" growing from a tree like we have here on the east side of Hutton Roof.
